DescriptionI think this was one of the main reasons for the proxy. The code for this got "lost" in ~2013.

E.g. a href to bob.+ should expand to bob.alice.gnu in the browser.
Maybe this should be done by a browser plugin though.

Yes, that was intentional, and yes the idea was to let the browser handle it. Messing with the HTML is bad, for starters, there is a high chance of mangling the wrong domain name, or JavaScript later assembling domain names, or even the Web site having a checksum somewhere. Basically, I decided we shouldn't mess with the data, that's safer.
