That's intentionally; GNUnet should be able to run without a configuration file, in which case 'all defaults' should be used.

Now, the error message

Feb 18 09:44:12-708861 util-1995 WARNING Error while determining the file size of /home/mwachs/gnunet/gnunet-debug/$DEFAULTCONFIG/

with this $DEFAULTCONFIG in it, that's what shouldn't happen. I don't get this, do you still get this if you run with an unmodified default installation, or is this something due to specifics in your setup?

Cannot reproduce anymore, with log level INFO i just get
Mar 04 17:34:05-744454 arm-12276 ERROR Could not access configuration file `/home/mwachs/.gnunet/gnunet.conf'

Which according to your statement above should not be an error but an INFO ...
But I cannot reproduce the original message

I tested with missing ~/.gnunet/gnunet.conf and missing ~/.gnunet/ directory
