i should add as well that the data files in question were located on an nfs share (western digital mybook world edition, so nfs server had a linux 2.6ish kernel)
however all the gnunet data in my homedir was on a local disk.
both nfs server and client have the same uid for my user and i have turned off the squashall nfs option

Fixed in SVN 20752 (in argument for metadata serialization subtracted 'slen' was wrong, caused *sometimes* 'size' to be set to '-1' which then caused the filename to be truncated (missing 0-terminator) and then ultimately the deserialization assertion was triggered).
