In this case, thanks to direct comms to the developers, the issue could be isolated, but only after activating diagnostic mode in the external iOS settings for the Taler Wallet app and after activating debugging mode in the app's internal settings, revealing then at least an error code 7001 (see screenshot 2). Text, however, is missing even in diagnostic+debug mode. In this case, it would help to state the service cannot be reached and that also without advanced settings to the user.

The message shown by default is just generic and also language-mixed in i18n terms (see screenshot 1), which makes it difficult to guess what's going on; in my case, the Internet was even working in principle. I was not at all expecting this to be a network issue...
